Q: What results did you get for Math in the Sec 1 EOY exam last year and the WA1 this year?

I only managed to score C5 in the EOY exam last year which was unsatisfactory. I turned the tide in WA1 this year and was duly rewarded with a top grade A1 and a perfect score 20/20.

Q: What did you do in your preparation for the WA1 this time round and how was it different from last time?

I underestimated the EOY exam last year and did not prepare thoroughly for it. For the WA1 this time round, I kickstarted my revision early. I made serious efforts to revise the notes inside out with specific focus on the methods and the steps used to solve the important types of questions within the topics. My next phase of revision was to apply these methods to solve similar questions on the assessment books and the past year exam papers, making sure that the steps were proper and my habitual errors were reduced to 0. This really helped to sharpen my skills, I could also familiarise myself with a wider range of questions that could be tested in the WA1.

Q: What did the tutor in the Achievers’ class do to help you in this subject?

The tutor explained the methods and the steps in details during the tuition lessons, highlighting the importance of showing all the steps clearly for the questions that I did both in class and homework. As a result, I developed the good habits of solving the questions in a step-by-step fashion as well as checking my work thoroughly for errors. From time to time, the tutor would not hesitate to clarify my doubts which helped me to understand better the topics. More importantly, he would consistently reiterate the need to be meticulous when I was doing my work so as to build my consistency and competency in Math.

Q : What is your target for the EOY exam this year? What will you do to achieve it?

My target is A1.

I will take the EOY exam this year more seriously because it will affect my subject combinations for Sec 3 next year. I will prepare well for it by doing my revision regularly. I will also take more initiatives to bring questions to clarify my doubts with the tutor every time I am unsure.
