They put in serious efforts in both the classwork as well as the homework. They would not hesitate to bring questions to clarify with the tutor and that they were fully aware that they had the responsibility to perform well in the WA.

The Math tutor made specific emphasis on the important steps within the methods to ensure that the students did not miss them out every time they use them to solve the questions. A lot of testing in terms of the formulas and the explanations of the important steps are done together with the students every lesson to build up their consistency and strengthen their know-hows and capabilities in doing the Math questions.

The students started their revision 1 month in advance, ensuring that they would not have a lack of time to revise. They asked questions whenever in doubts. Through the questions they posed, the tutor could get a better sense of their preparations and provide them with more effective guidance in the right direction.

The Chemistry tutor used many examples as well as challenging questions which enabled the students to think, analyse and understand what the questions meant and what approaches and concepts they should apply in their answers.
Other than written work, the tutor would ask many verbal questions now and then to ensure the consistencies in the students in terms of their concepts and the critical points in answering various structured questions. In this way, the students were trained to be alert especially in identifying the nitty-gritties in the questions and push themselves to analyse more thoroughly (than what they usually did last time) when they answered the questions. This developed their thinking and application skills in Pure Chemistry.

After the Chemistry tutor taught them the 5W1H method which could be applied to any subject, the students were observed to be more proactive with their studies. Instead of passively waiting for the tutor to spoon feed them, the students would always question themselves on what they did and did not understand, hence they found the motivations to ask questions to clarify their doubts and strengthen their understanding.

A: Within the cohort of 12 students, 4 scored A1, 4 scored A2 and 2 scored B3. Several of them improved at least 1 grade in this WA, absolutely outstanding performance!
Q: How did the students achieve their desired grades?
The students sought to clarify any doubts they had regarding the questions or concepts during the A Math lessons. They did not snowball their doubts.
More importantly, they did consistent revision on their own at home and brought questions (that they did not understand while going through their revision) to clarify with the tutors.

The A Math tutors went through all the effective methods and concepts clearly and repeatedly so that the students could understand and remember them. The students were often tasked to answer verbal questions to strengthen their understanding on the important steps within the solutions.
With frequent reminders and encouragements, the tutors successfully inculcated into the students the good habits of doing their work in a step-by-step fashion with thorough checking of their steps and calculations. They also clarified all the doubts with the students and made sure that all the students could follow before moving on with the lesson, thus every student was on the same page and no one would be confused during the lessons.
As the tutors were constantly concerned with the students’ performance, they would share with them the effective revision tips that the students could benefit from while doing their revision at home. This raised both the revision efficiency and the performance level of the students in A Math which gave rise to the outstanding results in the WA1.

Out of a cohort of 9 students, 2 clinched AL1, 2 achieved AL2 and another 3 scored AL3. Several of them improved at least 1 grade from the last WA. It is an outstanding effort from all of them.
Q: How did the students achieve their desired grades?
Firstly, the students understood the concepts and the methods taught in the tuition class. When they were attempting the questions during the tuition lessons, they could apply the methods and showed all the steps clearly.
Secondly, they did additional homework questions, so they gained more exposure to questions that commonly appeared in the WAs and exams.
Lastly, they were tested regularly on the recent and past concepts in the tuition lessons. That served as a consistent reminder to grasp strongly the important concepts of the topics.

The tutors helped to simplify the core concepts and explain them in a simple way that was clear for the students to understand. Verbal questions were frequently posed to the students to assess how much they understood and every now and then, the tutors would take initiatives to re-explain and set more examples to reinforce the explanations thoroughly to ensure that all the students could understand well.
