Q: What is the breakdown of the results?

Within the cohort of 4 students, 3 clinched grade 1. A sparkling set of results!

Q: How did the students achieve their desired grades?

They revised their work consistently all year round, including the build-up of the correct understanding of the concepts in both the Sec 3 and Sec 4 Chemistry topics, attempting the TYS questions as well as the past year school exam questions. For the wrong answers that they had written, they would not only do corrections, but also dive into the relevant topic to strengthen their understanding and clear their misconceptions. This would enable them to become more knowledgeable, thus they were able to provide correct and better-quality answers than before.

Q: What did the tutor do to help the students in this subject?

Every lesson, there would be a Q&A session. The Chemistry tutor would set additional questions which combined the current and the previous topics and the students would attempt them. During the process, the tutor would provide hints and facilitate small questions to lead the students in the right direction in terms of their thinking. Concepts would be tested on the spot and the tutor would train the students up to connect the concepts to the answers especially in putting the relevant explanations and details that answered according to the context of the questions. In this way, the students’ understanding would be strengthened and their answering techniques could only get better.

Q: What changes were observed in the students over the course of study?

The students developed strong understanding of each chapter and they knew how to explain the core concepts properly. More significantly, they were able to combine their knowledge from different chapters and apply them onto the questions especially the structured ones. They took more initiatives in asking questions when they were unsure, analysed the questions more in depth and thought more when writing down their answers. There were more accuracies in their classwork, homework and the school WAs.
